Title:  Admissions Counselor-Emphasis on Recruiting and Retaining Minority Students

Overview:  Fort Hays State University is seeking applications for an Admissions Counselor opening.  Admissions Counselors are based out of Hays, KS and are responsible for a specific recruitment demographic to support the University’s enrollment goals for on-campus, undergraduate students.  This individual will manage travel schedules, implement recruitment strategies and build relationships with high school personnel, prospective students and other constituents using various forms of communication. 

Duties and responsibilities:

The Admissions Counselor-Emphasis on Recruiting and Retaining Minority Students will assist in the development and implementation of an effective student recruitment and retention program for all students with emphasis on recruiting minority and first generation students.  The candidate will also assist/sponsor several university cultural clubs and organizations.

 

Admissions Recruitment and Retention Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and documentation of the Fort Hays State University Recruitment Plan.
  • Cultivate interest in FHSU.  Visit targeted high schools and community colleges, attend college fairs, foster relationships with church groups and community leaders to build positive rapport and create connections with groups and organizations such as Gear Up, Kansas Kids, Heritage Panel, AVID, etc.
  • Provide individualized assistance to prospective students and their family members throughout the recruitment process.
  • Be knowledgeable about all aspects of the admissions process for new students, including admissions policies and procedures, financial aid, costs, placement exams, registrations procedures, student housing etc.​
  • Develop and chair the Access to Academic Opportunity Grant committee and program.
  • Supervise the Diversity Mentorship Student Ambassadors.
  • Be creative in the implementation of new programs and marketing tools to focus on first generation college students and their families.
  • Assist with several cultural clubs and organizations on campus.
  • Participate as a member of the Hispanic College Institute committee.
  • Work closely with the Director of Inclusion and Diversity Excellence.
  • Extensive overnight travel and some evening and weekend work is required.

 

Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree and valid driver’s license. 

 

Preferred Qualities:  Bilingual in Spanish/English and Fort Hays State University graduate.

 

Experience:  Possess excellent communication skills and be able to relate to students, parents, alumni, counselors and university constituents.  Counselor must be goal oriented and have the ability to organize time and tasks.  Must also be sensitive to the attitudes of all prospective students and be aware of issues affecting their lives.  As a public representative of Fort Hays State University, this position must demonstrate a commitment to the highest personal and professional standards and have extensive knowledge of the FHSU campus and student life.

Position Title: Assistant Director, Transfer Admissions

Occupational Summary

This position will be responsible for successful achievement of transfer student recruitment goals. Using data and best practices and working collaboratively with other Transfer Admissions staff, the Assistant Director will develop and implement recruitment strategies designed to maximize the opportunity for growth in transfer student enrollment at Newman. The Assistant Director will develop and cultivate on-going relationships with community colleges and other partner institutions and assist the university in identifying opportunities for strengthening community college pathways to Newman. The Assistant Director will demonstrate a strong commitment to and enthusiasm for the university and its mission; a clear understanding of and commitment to the small faith-based Liberal Arts environment; and a sincere interest in working with prospective students and their families.  The Assistant Director, Transfer Admissions provides leadership to peers through conduct, attitude and professionalism and must understand the university’s policies and procedures and exercise judgment accordingly.

 

The Assistant Director, Transfer Admissions will assist in and be responsible for all aspects of the admissions and recruitment process including, but not limited to – fall, spring and summer recruitment travel, maintaining office hours for walk-ins and registrations days; professional and research-based management of a recruitment territory; counseling prospective students and parents throughout the college application, selection, and financial aid processes; assisting guidance counselors, faculty, alumni/ae, and prospective students and parents to better understand the university’s mission and degree programs through personal interviews, group presentations, and extensive follow-up communication; conducting thorough application review of admissions materials and providing decisions in a timely fashion; assisting in all recruitment related events both on- and off-campus; and representing the college with the utmost of professionalism at all times.

 

Work Performed:

  1. Actively recruit transfer students from an assigned territory by attending college fairs and college visits at community colleges, planning and hosting special recruitment events, providing admissions presentations, conducting one-on-one meetings with campus visitors and following up with prospective students and applicants via phone, email and scheduled appointments.
  2. Develop relationships with community college personnel and assist in the scheduling of campus visits to Newman’s campus for community college advisor and administrator groups.
  3. Develop familiarity with community college curricula and inform leadership on opportunities for curriculum alignment and transfer pathways.
  4. Participate in telemarketing campaigns.
  5. Communicate with students to inform them of the programs and opportunities at Newman and to assist them through the application and pre-enrollment processes.  
  6. Participates in on and off campus events for prospective transfer students and occasionally assist with other special events.
  7. Participates in campus visits, receptions, etc.
  8. Inform students about the availability of scholarships and financial aid and counsel students through the financial aid process.

  11. Analyze and complete recruitment/enrollment reports, travel evaluation reports and expense reports in a timely manner and as instructed by supervisors.

Director of Undergraduate Admissions - Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA

Old Dominion University (ODU) is seeking applications for the position of Director of Undergraduate Admissions. ODU is located in Norfolk, Virginia, a vibrant metropolitan region of coastal Virginia. The institution is a state-assisted, Carnegie doctoral/research-extensive institution with a strong focus on student success and learning. Reporting to the Executive Director of Admissions, the Director of Undergraduate Admissions develops, implements, and executes recruitment and admission strategies that fulfill the University’s enrollment objectives, including: directing all domestic undergraduate recruitment and admission functions; researching and planning departmental initiatives; monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of admission policies, practices, and procedures; leading the development of recruitment materials and establishing communication strategies utilizing current technologies. The Director of Undergraduate Admissions will manage the admission process, including the review of applicant information and dissemination of decisions; oversee the daily operations of the office, develop and maintain strategic budget and resource management practices; and is expected to build and foster internal and external community relationships. The Director is responsible for managing an operational budget of approximately $2.5 million and hiring, training, and managing a staff of 33.

The successful candidate must possess a master’s degree and demonstrate progressively responsible and successful experience in the administration of admissions and recruitment programs in higher education. Evidence of demonstrated planning, organizational, customer service, leadership, and supervisory skills is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including effective public speaking and presentation skills, and the ability to take initiative, exercise sound judgment, and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment as well as demonstrated evidence of strong analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to think strategically, develop collaborative relationships, and work effectively with diverse groups are required.
