Fall Conference slated for September 27-29, 2000, in McPherson

The fall KACRAO Conference will be held from September 27-29, 2000, at the Red Coach Inn in McPherson, Kansas. The Program and Local Arrangements Committees have been hard at work this year to bring the membership insightful professional development coupled with fun activities and entertainment. Joey Linn, FHSU, President-Elect, and Glenn Lygrisse, Tabor, LAC Chair, provided a preview of the events in recent phone interviews. Governor Bill Graves has been invited to speak at the conference opening and has tentatively accepted. Due to his scheduling, confirmation of his speech will not be available until approximately one month prior to the conference.

Dr. Dave Ambler, Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Kansas, will deliver the conference's second keynote speech. His address, "Keeping Higher Education Open and Accessible," promises to be beneficial for both enrollment newcomers and veterans.

Bill Haid, Past President of AACRAO, will speak and represent the national association at the conference. Those members active in AACRAO know Bill's work well, as he led the turn-around in the national association that took it out of the red and into the black. He is a leader in higher education and holds a career-long commitment to the professional development offered by AACRAO and its state and regional organizations.

New to the conference this year is a registrar's panel, "From Arena to Web," which talks about the changes in technology and procedures over the years. Some of our great veteran registrar's will share their experiences from decades of work in the field.

As part of KACRAO's exchange with the Kansas School Counselors Association (KSCA), a panel of school administrators will discuss high school issues. This is in addition to the annual high school counselors' panel.

The New Counselor's Workshop will also be presented in a new format. This is a great way to provide training to new admissions counselors on your staff, providing them with information and experience from seasoned professionals as well as mentorship and connections with other "rookies." Make sure to send your staff to the conference to take part in the workshop. The cost for the workshop is included in the conference registration fee, and no additional registration is required beyond the conference registration.

Anthony Lyons, Director of Financial Aid at Dodge City Community College, will present a new session for the conference, "The Essence of Leadership." A legislative panel on higher education issues, including governance, will also be offered. Conference attendees will get a chance to "surf KACRAO" in a new session that help members understand the features of our new web site, www.kacrao.org.

A favorite session on publications will be repeated this year. Stamats, Inc., a leader in higher education marketing, will again present a session on successful publications.

The entertainment for this year's conference promises to be just as exciting as the program. Several unique and fun events are planned for the conference.

Wednesday evening, members will go to nearby Lindsborg, a Swedish community. The merchants in the downtown have agreed to stay open just for KACRAO. Bring your gold cards! Transportation will be on your own, and you may wish to carpool from McPherson. Dinner will be at the Swedish Crown restaurant - an authentic Swedish smorgasbord will be served. Swedish dancers and fiddlers will entertain the group. Come prepared - you may be picked from the audience to participate!

Thursday evening's festivities will be held in McPherson on the campus of McPherson College. It will begin with Hors d'ouvres and entertainment by Scottish bagpipers and a German musical group, the "Snigglefritz band". Dinner will follow with a German buffet dinner featuring authentic ethnic foods. Dinner entertainment will feature a comedy production, "A Tuna Christmas."

The hotel for the conference, the McPherson Red Coach Inn, will be occupied only by the KACRAO Conference. Renovations to the sleeping and eating rooms are underway and should be complete by conference time. Perkin's Restaurant will provide meals at the hotel. Due to the lower food and hotel costs in McPherson, full breakfast buffets will be available instead of continental breakfasts found at most conferences.

Motel reservations are filling fast. The Red Coach requests that each institution call the motel directly for reservations. Be sure to mention that you are with KACRAO. Their number is 316-241-6960.

The site is easily accessible from all four corners of the state. The hotel is located just off Interstate 135, so those who are "directionally challenged" will have no problems finding the hotel.

At each session, door prizes will be awarded. Other door prizes will be given at the final business meeting on Friday.

And now for those burning questions - inquiring minds want to know!

1. The "Sausage Dance" is scheduled as part of the LAC welcome. But, will Governor Graves sausage dance, or create the political faux pas of the year?
2. Will LAC Chair Glenn Lygrisse actually wear a kilt on Thursday night?
3. Rumors are flying that President Diane Barnes has booked herself into the Honeymoon Suite. Is it the bed or the hot tub that is heart-shaped?

For the answers to these and other tantalizing questions, you must attend the fall conference in McPherson! Look for registration information this summer on the KACRAO web site.
