Budget for 2001 Proposed by Executive Committee

The 2001 Budget has been approved for proposal to the KACRAO Membership. The Executive Committee met on June 23, 2000, in Wichita to review the current year's budget and propose changes for the coming fiscal year. The 2001 fiscal year coincides with the calendar year, beginning on January 1, 2001. The 2001 proposed budget is $145 greater than the 2000 budget.

The budget report contained in this issue shows the final amounts spent in the 1999 fiscal year, the current 2000 year budget and the proposed 2001 budget. One of the first items discussed was that there are several budget lines that are rarely expended. This is due to the fact that many of our institutions absorb small costs, such as photocopying and postage. The Executive Committee maintained these items, noting that we should not create an expectation that all schools must absorb these costs and that no committee should be put in the position of relying on institutional funds to cover KACRAO expenses. This could potentially create a difficult position for a committee member with his or her school, or even prevent members from serving on committees should their institutions not desire or be able to support these expenses.

Several changes were made to the 2001 budget. The EEO Committee reduced the budget line for their work to come in line with lower anticipated expenditures. The EEO Directory will be published on the KACRAO web site and will not be printed and mailed. These savings total $1,100. More electronic savings are found in publications committee, where the Current will be available on line, not printed and mailed to members. A fall "High School Counselor's Edition" will still be mailed to high schools. The savings for publications is also $1,100.

Budget increases occur in four areas. The Executive Committee proposes to invest in leadership training for the president-elect annually and the treasurer biannually. This training is offered by AACRAO at no charge, but they do not cover travel costs. These are anticipated to be $1,400. Also added to the proposed budget are incorporation fees of $245. See President Barnes' article on incorporation in this issue for more information. The KACRAO web site hosting fees have been added to the Technology Committee's line item. These are anticipated to be $700 in the coming year and will allow members to use interactive databases for member, institution and high school directories. The President's reception for KACRAO members at the AACRAO annual meeting is proposed at $300 to account for increased food and beverage costs.

The KACRAO membership will discuss and vote on the proposed budget at the annual meeting in September. Questions on the KACRAO budget should be directed to Dan Kinney, KACRAO Treasurer, by e-mail at dkinney@allen.cc.ks.us.
